State Sets New Immunization requirements for 6th grade students

In June of 2002, the State of Michigan set some additional requirements for students entering public schools in the State.  All schools are required to review the immunization of all students entering the district, and particularly review the immunizations of all students entering the 6th grade in the fall of each year to insure that all immunization requirements directed by the State of Michigan are met.

Beginning with the 2002-2003 school year, schools in Michigan including New Haven Middle School, are required to assess and report the immunization status of all 6th grade students (in addition to newly enrolled students). To this end, parents are required to report to the school district the immunization documents of their children before they can attend school.

Once again, before students will be allowed to enter school, all 6th graders must have documentation showing they have had the following immunizations:

- Complete series of DtaP/Td with one dose in the last 10 years
- Three doses of polio
- Two doses of MMR
- Three doses of hepatitis B
- One dose of varicella (chickenpox) if no history of the disease

All doses must be given at appropriate ages and must be spaced properly.  This new requirement will help assure school-aged children are up-to-date and protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Parents will be required to supply their child’s school with up-to-date immunization records before school starts in the fall. Children must have one dose of each vaccine to start school this fall and must receive the follow-up doses of each vaccine according the the prescribed timeline.  .

If necessary, waiver forms are available from New Haven Middle School.
