Regular School Election

May 8, 2007.

Election News and Information
On Board Seats.

As a reminder, all parts of the election process are now handled by the Macomb County Clerk's Office.  School districts no longer be handling any part of the school elections

This change on January 1, 2005, required school districts to schedule all school elections on one of four dates throughout the calendar year.  In addition, the Board of Education had to select a date on which to schedule the annual election.  The New Haven Schools Board of Education has elected to hold its Annual Election each year on the first Tuesday in May.

This year, at the May election, there will be three positions expiring on the Board of Education.  First is a one year term, created by the resignation of a Board of Education member last July.  Second are two, four-year terms, which are the terms expiring for Mrs. Karen Goodhue and Mrs. Sue Simon.  Both of these terms expire on June 30, 2007.  .

Registered electors of the school district that meet the following qualifications are eligible to file petitions and run for election at the May 8, 2007, election:

  • A resident of the school district,
  • A citizen of the United States, and
  • Be at least 18 years of age

As a result of the election consolidation legislation and the associated changes in the election process, members of the public must be aware of the following changes:

  • School districts no longer have responsibilities for the handling of elections.  All phases of the election will be handled through the Macomb County Clerk's Office.
  • The Clerk's Office has told us that all notices relating to the election (Close of Registration Notices, Notices of Election, etc.) are planned to be published in The Voice Newspapers and The Macomb Daily.
  • Registered electors interested in running for a position on the Board of Education must obtain petitions, information on election finance committees, and file the Affidavit of Identity with the Clerk's Office.  Candidates should check with the Clerk's office to find out the minimum number of approved signatures needed on the petition for filing.  Instead of filing petitions, a candidate can pay a non-refundable filing fee of One Hundred Dollars ($100) at the County Clerk's Office.  The school district offices can no longer either provide or accept this paperwork.
  • Completed petitions must be filed with the Clerk's office by 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 in order to appear on the ballot.
  • Candidates who file appropriately, may withdraw, in writing, at the Macomb County Clerk's Office by 4:00 pm on Friday, February 16, 2007.

This legislation also changed the number of precincts in the district and their location.  This may actually change from one election to the next.  It is important that registered electors watch The Voice Newspapers and The Macomb Daily for information related to the election and their voting place.  The school district will not be able to provide or verify this information.

Absentee Voter applications will be sent to all qualified electors by the clerks office.  When completed, these ballots must also be returned to the clerks office and not the school district offices.
