Special Services Parent Advisory Committee letter to parents
If you have a special needs child, New Haven Community Schools and the Parent Advisory Committee know how important it is that you get the help and support your family needs. New Haven Community Schools Special Services Department and the Parent Advisory Committee invite you to participate in PAC.

This very important committee is dedicated to helping students and parents deal with the hardships that are places on a family. Whether the need is minor or great, PAC can help.

The committee’s purpose is outlined in its mission Statement:

Our mission as the New Haven Community Schools Parent Advisory
Committee is to continually seek knowledge of the special education
issues so that we can educate, empower and assist families to improve
programs and services for all students with disabilities.

The Parents Advisory Committee is a group of parents of special education children. They give their time to not only enrich the lives and educational experience of their own children, but of all children. They represent the parents and families of special education children in the district.

When parents belong to the PAC and meet with the special education department of the district they perform a very important and special role in the education of their children. They:

&Mac183 Learn about the special education process and assist other parents with special education children by answering questions about rules and regulations;
&Mac183 They mentor their children and others in the district;
&Mac183 They help to educate all parents on the needs of special education children;
&Mac183 They build positive relationships with the district, administrators and teachers;
&Mac183 Learn about and provide input on legislative issues;
&Mac183 Network with other special education parents in the district, the county and the state; and
&Mac183 Meet on a regular basis with the district, the county and state to discuss issues important to all parents.

The PAC accomplishes these goals in many different ways. By reaching out to families on both a formal and informal basis the PAC can be an educational source and a support group to other families with special needs children. The New Haven PAC may speak at parent and group meetings to raise the awareness of the needs of special education children. The PAC advises New Haven and other districts in the county about issues to be addressed in newsletters for the district and the county. They also host speakers for large and small groups in the education field and the community at large that address issues in the district and beyond.

This may just be the group that you as a special education parent have been searching for to help your child become all that he or she can be. You are invited to join the New Haven PAC. You can participate at what ever level your time and talents will allow. The committee needs help on many different levels and will gladly accept whatever help you can provide.

Besides helping out the community and the special education needs of the children of the district, you will be demonstrating to your child that you are committed to doing what it takes for them to be successful. They will thank you for that.

The PAC will be meeting on the following Mondays in the New Haven High School conference room from 9:30 am until 10:30 am.
