The mission of New Haven Community Schools Special Services Department is to prepare each student in our district to reach his/her potential. Our mission is met through a combination of classes and support services. In addition, there may be a need for emotional assistance which enables each child to be an independent citizen.

To receive Early Intervention Programming or Special Education, children must meet eligibility guidelines according to the IDEA. If you suspect your child has a disability affecting his or her school performance, please notify your child’s teacher, school social worker or school principal.

Child Find is an array of comprehensive activities available through New Haven Community
Schools and/or Macomb Intermediate School District which identifies resident children, ages
birth through twenty-six years who may be in need of special education services. Child Find
offers evaluations to determine whether a child has a disability, at no charge. Following the
evaluation, eligible children are referred to appropriate programs and services. If you feel your child needs special education services or if you have any questions, please call Mrs. Michele Taylor at 586-749-9535

The Child Find evaluation is completed by a team specializing in the area of concern, working with the parent to determine eligibility for special education services. Members of the Child Find team may include the following highly qualified specialists:

• Teacher Consultant

• Speech/Language Pathologist

• School Psychologist

• School Social Worker

• Occupational Therapist

• Physical Therapist

In addition to New Haven Community Schools’ K-12 programs, the following services are also available when deemed appropriate through an Individual Education Plan (IEP):

• Early Child Special Education Program

• Speech and language services

• Macomb Intermediate School District center programs

• Homeless

504 Policy

The District shall not discriminate against any student having a disability, a record of having had a disability, or who is otherwise regarded as having a disability. The District shall also, as required by law, attempt to locate and identify each student within the District’s jurisdiction who may be an eligible student under Section 504. The District shall evaluate each student identified under Section 504 and provide each eligible student with a FAPE as defined by law.

The District also shall not discriminate against persons based upon any other legally protected characteristic. Other District publications and policy documents should be consulted to obtain details of those prohibitions, and the means by which an internal complaint or grievance concerning any type of discrimination may be filed.
